This is a rare bike, in fact it’s the only one registered on the site. The Special was a model line in its own right in the early days of IF back in ’97/’98. It had a more compact top tube in comparison to the Deluxe models of the same era…

Jake, I want to hear details about this thing. Where did you find it? I remember lusting after one of those Judy SL’s back in the day. Is that an Azonic stem on there? Nice find, let’s here some details about this oldie! Enjoy it!

I picked it up on ebay and drove 6 hours (to Baltimore and back) pick it up. I changed a few parts (fork, stem and seat) as soon as I got it home. It came with a red Judy SL from a few years later, a Bontrager stem and a lump of foam that someone mistook for a seat. It was really a leap of faith purchase because the Ebay listing had next to no information about frame material, components or condition so I got a really good price but didn’t know what to expect. When I got it in my hands I was surprised at how good the condition was. The fork had no oil left but I knew it was getting replaced by the Judy I had, there are some scuffs from cable rub but nothing a little polish wouldn’t fix and aside from that everything is in great shape. When I got home I gave the bike a wash and went to work replacing the bits that didn’t agree with me then yesterday I spent all day on the bike and absolutely love it. I’ll update with some new pics when I figure out how.

Awesome. Sounds like my first ’99, a similiar situation. Got it on ebay for an amazing price. Probably the best under 300 dollars I have ever spent, seriously. Please enjoy the heck out of it. You have been bitten by the bug!
